Upgrading Magento often requires specific skills and specialties to successfully complete the upgrade. Do you have a team of developers and specialists available to complete the upgrade for you? Is my ECC Magento module compatible?
Before you choose to upgrade Magento 2.4, be certain that Epicor(r) Prophet 21 offers support for the version you are considering. Unless Epicor ECC has been prepared and created for your Magento version, you may not be eligible to upgrade. When will the Epicor ECC version be available for your desired version of Magento? What if I choose to keep my old version and not upgrade?

Users that choose note to remain on the most recent version of Magento will be missing the latest security enhancements. As open source software, Magento is a target and security concerns should be at the top of any Magento operators list.
In other words, if you don't upgrade, your Magento system is at risk of hacking, hijacking, or other security problems for you and your customers. Version 2.3 reaches End of Support in 2022.
PCI Compliance
If you accept credit cards, you need to be PCI compliant. Currently, you will need to ensure you're on the latest Magento version to ensure PCI compliance. The risk of not being PCI compliant includes exposure to lawsuits and other penalties if your actions compromise user card or account data.
Upgrade Treadmill
If you intend to use Magento, integrated with Prophet 21 via Epicor Commerce Connect, then you should plan to upgrade Magento and endure the upgrade process at least once a year. If you fall behind, you risk website hacking and it becomes more difficult to transition to the current version.
As an open-source product, the code of Magento is publicly available. Any ill-intentioned person or group can review the code and find flaws to exploit.
In addition to upgrading Magento on a regular basis, you also need to ensure that your plugins are upgraded. Often you'll find that plugins lag somewhat behind Magento meaning that even though Magento may have a patch for a security hole, you cannot apply it because the plugins you utilize are not yet compatible.
Upgrades with Magento require time and expertise that most distributors don't possess.
